Different Types of Coffee Makers

There are, basically, two major types of coffee makers on the market today: drip coffee makers and espresso machines. Drip coffee makers include percolators that brew the coarse, light grounds characteristic of North American brews. Espresso machines come in all shapes and sizes and brew via steam and pressure. They also oftentimes have additional accessories built into the machine, such as steamers for milk and cup warmers where you can rest your cup while you make your brew. There are numerous options among these machines, some of them very affordable.

There is a percolator version of espresso coffee makers, as well. These small, simple pots are actually the preferred way to brew espresso in much of Europe. The pots are very inexpensive, costing a small fraction of what an electric espresso maker would cost. The drawback is the lack of a steam wand. You can still easily make your milk, however, by heating it in the microwave or on the stove top. There are numerous different types of milk frothers on the market that are actually easier to use than the steam wands on the expensive electric espresso machines. Those steam wands, however, do produce some fantastic results when they're used correctly.

Another popular, and very simple, coffee maker is the French press. This coffee maker contains no complex mechanical parts. The hot water is added to the press and the coffee thrown directly in with it. After the brewing time has elapsed, a plunger with a screen is depressed into the liquid, forcing the grounds to the bottom and leaving the coffee clean and ready to drink. This device produces some of the strongest of all coffee, but is also very easy to regulate by altering the brew time allotted before it is pressed.

If you want a coffee maker for a simple cup of Joe, there are plenty on the market. The cone-style drip pots are particularly popular among coffee fans. These pots produce a very strong brew. Altered with various flavorings and with milk added, the result is a rich, full-bodied brew that will certainly get your eyes open in the morning. There are also other variants on the market, such as coffee pots suitable for outdoor use and much more. Some of these devices can offer many years of service and, oftentimes, paying a bit more is worth the money spent.
